652 (1896). – Muskauer Baumschulen, Haupt-Katalog, 1910, 37, as Geheimer Rat Singelmann. – Späth-Buch, 1920, 223.
Introduced in 1887 by the firm of L. Späth, Berlin, Germany, and one of their productions; according to information kindly supplied me by the firm in January, 1924, this was a chance seedling.
Notes on plant in Arnold Arboretum (grown from cuttings taken June 5, 1895, from plant received from Späth in January, 1888; no. 3004-1 Arn. Arb.). Flowers single, symmetrical, medium size; corolla-lobes rounded at apex, cucullate; anthers visible; tone dark to intermediate; color in bud Neutral Red to Daphne Red to Tourmaline Pink (XXXVIII.); when expanded Tourmaline Pink with margins of Pale Laelia Pink without, Eupatorium Purple (XXXVIII.) to Hay’s Lilac tinged with Light Pinkish Lilac (XXXVII.) within. Clusters long, well-filled, somewhat conical, large.
The name of this form sometimes appears in French nursery catalogues as Conseiller Singelmann. A plant of this name growing in the Rochester collection and received from Transon in 1892 proved to be the same upon comparison with the plant just described.
