Named for Pierre Alphonse Martin Lavallée, 1836-1884, French botanist and general secretary of the Central Horticultural Society of France.

Alphonse Lavallée Lemoine, Cat. no. 101, VIII. (1885), “Arbuste touffu, très ramifié, fleurissant dès la taille de 6o centimètres, chacque ramification est terminée par un énorme thyrse de 20 à 25 centimètres et d’une largeur proportionelle, bi-tri-quadrifurqué, compacte, d’une tenue irréprochable; fleurs très grandes, formées de 12 à 15 pétales en moyenne, ceux-ci sont allongés, bien imbriqués et donnent à la fleur la forme et l’aspect d’une fleur de jacinthe double réduit de moitié, un quart des fleurs atteignent une trentaine de pétales; la couleur est d’un beau bleu de ciel nuancé de violet, boutons purpurins. Introduced in 1885 by the firm of V.Lemoine of Nancy, France, and one of their procuctions. Alphonse Lavallée was the owner of a celebrated Arboretum at Segrez, France.

Notes on plant in Dept, of Parks, Rochester, N.Y. Flowers double, medium sise; corolla-lobes pointed, expanding into a star-like flower; tone intermediate to pale; color in bud Deep Purplish Vinaceous (XLIV.) to Argyle Purple (XXXVII.); when expanded Purplish Lilac (XXXVII.) without, Lilac to Pale Lavender-Violet (XXV.) within. The lowers appear to be darker without than within. Clusters pyramidal, medium sise.

Бутоны лилово-пурпурные; цветки сине-лиловые, с голубизной, густомахровые, крупные (2-2,5 см), красивой звездчатой формы, с приятным запахом. Соцветия крупные (24х18 см), плотные, прочные. Листья слегка вытянутые. Кусты средней высоты, с серо-коричневыми побегами. Цветет умеренно, в средние сроки.
