Named for Edith Louisa Cavell, 1865-1915, British army nurse executed in Belgium by German military for treason.

Edith Cavell Lemoine, Cat. no. 190, 24 (1916), “Big pyramidal thyrses, large regular imbricated flowers, pure milk white, buds suffused cream and pale sulphur.” — Have-meyer in Gard. Mag. XXV. 233 (1917).
Introduced in 1916 by the firm of V. Lemoine et fils, Nancy, France, and one of their productions.
Notes on plant in Arnold Arboretum (plant received from T. A. Havemeyer, Glen Head, N. Y., in April, 1918; no. 7916 Arn. Arb.). Flowers double, extra large; corolla-lobes long, narrow, expanding to a right angle with corolla-tube or curling, occasionally broad, pointed or rounded at apex; color in bud Dull Green-Yellow to Chalcedony Yellow to Light Chalcedony Yellow (xvii.); when expanded white. Clusters open, spreading, long or extra long, showy. Leaves are frequently present at the base of the subdivisions of the inflorescence. A fine double-flowered white Lilac.

Бутоны зеленовато-кремовые; цветки белые, крупные (до 2,5 см), махровые (2 тесно сдвинутых венчика), слабодушистые; лепестки овальные, почти плоские. Соцветия стройные, чаще из одной пары крупных (22х8 см), пирамидальных, ребристых метелок. Кусты широкие, с длинными побегами. Цветет умеренно, в средние сроки. Используется для оформления, срезки.
